photography is my passion

I'm Katy VanHelmond, an equine photographer based on Long Island, New York. My passion for horses began at the age of six, and from that moment, I knew they would be a part of my life forever. Like many barn kids, I spent every spare moment at the stable, watching and learning. I quickly discovered that photography was not just a tool for capturing moments but also an invaluable way to study and appreciate the art of riding. Every weekend, you could find me ringside with a camera in hand, capturing riders in action and witnessing their joy in reliving those moments.
In 2020, I launched my professional photography career, and by 2021, I joined the Kind Media team. This opportunity allowed me to photograph prestigious events such as The Hampton Classic, WEF, The Devon Horse Show, Lake Placid, GLEF, and Longines GCT NYC. I also had the pleasure of working with SEL Photography at Fairfield and Old Salem. In 2023, I partnered with Boss Mare Media, where I had the privilege of photographing top international competitions, including CHIO Rotterdam, Chantilly, LGCT Riesenbeck, and the Dublin Horse Show. Additionally, I spent a season in the desert collaborating with some of the most talented equine photographers on the West Coast. These experiences have refined my skills, deepened my understanding of the sport, and given me the confidence to capture every moment with precision and artistry.
When I’m not behind the camera, I’m with my horse, Pequt—an ex-racehorse turned polo pony, trail horse, and now jumper. Over the past six years, she has proven to be the bravest and most patient partner I could ask for. Pequt is the reason I turned my passion for photography into a profession, as she constantly reminds me of the profound bond between horse and rider. My goal is to preserve that connection through timeless, high-quality imagery that allows riders to relive their most cherished moments for years to come.
